Rox miss out on franchise’s first No. 1 pick

The Colorado Rockies entered the MLB Draft Lottery with a tie atop the odds pile but exited disappointed.

Cleveland jumped from the ninthbest odds to the first overall pick in the draft lottery Tuesday, and the Rockies turned their tied-for-leaguebest 18.3-percent chance for the No. 1 overall pick into the third pick of the opening round. It is the third time since 2013 that Colorado has picked third — the last two were Brendan Rodgers in 2015 and former starter Jon Gray in 2013 out of Oklahoma. Of the three teams tied for the first pick, the Rockies finished highest behind Cincinnati in the second slot.

Colorado has still never received the first-overall pick in a draft.

The Rockies were given the best odds, alongside the Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals, after the team embarked on its first 100-loss season in franchise history, and accounted for the worst record in the National League (59-103). They finished 12 wins behind a second-worst tie between St. Louis and Washington.

MLB.com published a list of draft predictions, and the site has the third-overall prospect in the 2024 MLB Draft as second baseman Travis Bazzana out of Oregon State. He hit .370 last season and could be a fit with the club if it was picking the best player available with each slot. Colorado has leaned into pitching, though, and used 14 of their 2023 selections on the unit to backfill the organization’s depth.

During the season, the Rockies also acquired pitching with each of their trades. The same MLB.com projections have the top-rated pitcher as Wake Forest’s Chase Burns. The right-handed starter struck out 14.3 hitters per nine innings and transferred in from Tennessee where he was once teammates with Colorado’s top pick in the 2023 draft, Chase Dollander. Jordan Beck, the organization’s fourth-rated prospect, was also on the Volunteers.
