GAME RECAP
What happened: Colorado held off Anaheim’s late charge to begin a fivegame homestand with a victory.
What went right: Kurtis MacDermid, less than two minutes into regulation, scored on a feed from Nathan MacKinnon. It marked the second goal in consecutive game appearances for MacDermid (Nov. 24 at Wild). MacKinnon scored in the second period on a crosscrease feed from Jonathan Drouin to go up 2-0. Logan O’Connor’s wrist shot in the third put Colorado ahead by three goals. MacKinnon finished with a threepoint night.
What went wrong: Anaheim scored twice in the third period to cut their deficit to 3-2. Sam Carrick notched a short-handed goal after a Mikko Rantanen turnover in the neutral zone led to a breakaway. The Ducks also capitalized on a 5-on-3 chance with a Leo Carlsson power-play goal. Tomas Tatar is still seeking his first goal with the Avs after his 23rd game to start the season.
Between the pipes: Alexandar Georgiev made 31 of 33 saves. Anaheim’s John Gibson stopped 27 of Colorado’s 30 shots on goal.
What’s next: The Avalanche (16-7-2) play the Winnipeg Jets, 7 p.m. Thursday at Ball Arena.
