The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Anaheim Ducks, 3-2, Tuesday night at Ball Arena. Here are three takeaways from the home victory:

Injured Avs

Good news? Colorado is back in the win column. Bad news? Injuries are beginning to stack up. Bowen Byram left in the second period (upper body) and did not return. It stemmed from high contact from an unpenalized collision with Anaheim’s Max Jones.

Coach Jared Bednar said defenseman Cale Makar (lower body) was “doubtful” on Tuesday night, and he did not play for a second consecutive game. Forwards Valeri Nichushkin (illness) and Andrew Cogliano (lower body) were also unavailable against the Ducks.

Olausson called up

Oskar Olausson, a 2021 first-round NHL draft pick, made his season debut after being called up from the Colorado Eagles (AHL). The 6-foot-1, 180-pound winger played on the second line while recording two shots and one hit. Olausson accounted for 11:50 of ice time.

The 21-year-old Sweden native, in 20 AHL games this season, produced three goals and five assists. There’s no doubting his NHL-level shot and playmaking abilities. Rounding out defensive details and winning puck battles will give Olausson the chance to earn a regular Avs roster spot.

Shuffling lines

The Avs responded to a three-game winless streak with significant forward changes. Logan O’Connor and Jonathan Drouin joined Nathan MacKinnon on the top line.

Ross Colton swapped with Ryan Johansen to play No. 2 center alongside Mikko Rantanen and Olausson. Joel Kiviranta joined the third unit and Kurtis MacDermid entered the lineup.

“We tried to put some pairs together of some offensive guys, and I tried to put a worker that could help establish a forecheck and come up with some pucks as our third guy,” Bednar said. “You knew it wasn’t going to look anything close to what we normally have once those guys went out. Giving some guys some opportunities. … Try to build some lines that you can trust on the defensive side of it.”
