Sanders hosts visit from Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers

BY TYLER KING The Denver Gazette

Joel Embiid does have something on Nikola Jokic.

He’s met Deion Sanders. Embiid, the reigning NBA MVP, and the rest of the Philadelphia 76ers team, who are holding their training camp at Colorado State and had their first practice Tuesday, met with Coach Prime for a dinner in Boulder, according to a YouTube video posted by Deion Sanders Jr.

Several members of the Colorado men’s basketball team, including fivestar freshman Cody Williams and returning starters KJ Simpson and Tristan da Silva were also at the dinner.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse and several members of the team sat around talking with Coach Prime, who sat next to Sixers co-owner David J. Adelman.

Adelman has a previous relationship with Sanders, meeting with him back in February with his daughter, who is a student at CU-Boulder.

The Sixers aren’t the only members of the NBA family to hold court with Coach Prime over the last few days, either. Hall of Famers Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett were on the sidelines for the Buffs’ loss against USC at Folsom Field.

Several members of the Nuggets were also in attendance at the CUUSC game, including Aaron Gordon, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and DeAndre Jordan. Former Buffs standout and Parker native Derrick White was also in a suite with Celtics teammate Jaylen Brown.

Don’t expect two-time MVP and reigning Finals MVP Nikola Jokic to make an appearance in Boulder anytime soon, though.

Jokic was asked at the team’s media day Monday if he was aware of what Coach Prime was doing at CU.

“No, sorry,” was the honest answer from Joker.

The Nuggets, who are currently in San Diego for their training camp, begin their title defense on Oct. 24 at Ball Arena. They host Embiid and the Sixers on Jan. 27.
