Bolles named nominee for Walter Payton Man of the Year

Left tackle Garett Bolles, who has staved off pass rushers this season and been an active participant in a juvenile probation court mentorship program in Arapahoe County, was named Tuesday as the Broncos’ nominee for the 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

The award, which is considered the league’s most prestigious honor, recognizes a player for his outstanding leadership on the field and in the community. All 32 teams select one nominee, and a winner will be announced during NFL Honors on Feb. 8 in Las Vegas, three days before Super Bowl LVIII is held there.

Bolles is in his seventh season with the Broncos. He was named the Broncos’ Community Impact Award winner in 2022 and a Broncos Community Ambassador in 2021.

Bolles has focused his efforts in the community on mentoring justice-involved youth. In addition to his work with the juvenile probation court mentorship program, he has made regular visits to the Marvin W. Foote Youth Services Center. In announcing Bolles’ nomination, the Broncos said he “has impacted hundreds of youths with his outreach, providing mentorship and developing a unique, in-person connection with each child.”

Each nominee receives up to a $55,000 donation to the charity of his choice while the national winner will receive a $250,000 donation.

The award has been handed out by the NFL since 1970 and was renamed in 1999 after the late Chicago Bears Hall of Fame running back. Quarterback John Elway in 1992 became the Broncos’ first and so far, only winner.
