New York City Mayor Eric Adams is taking the border crisis into his own hands.

The Democratic mayor is side-stepping the Biden administration and attempting to intervene in the historic wave of immigration bringing people from South America, Central America, and Mexico to the United States, according to a city hall announcement.

Adams will visit Mexico City on Wednesday, then head to Puebla, Mexico, before going on to Quito, Ecuador, then Bogota, Colombia, and the Darien jungle between Panama and Colombia.

Although the Adams administration has touted his trip as a way to bolster diplomatic relations and see how immigrants make the journey, the mayor is more focused on communicating through local news outlets in each region that the United States is not open to illegal immigrants, according to the New York Post.

Adams previously visited the U.S.-Mexico border in January, where he called on national leaders to do more to stop the immigration crisis.

Adams declared a state of emergency in October 2022, and he has been unsuccessful with calls for the Biden administration to stop the flow of people crossing the border illegally.

The timing of Adams’s trip outside the U.S. now is no coincidence. The city has already received requests for assistance from more than 110,000 illegal immigrants who were released at the border and traveled north to the Big Apple.

But the city’s Asylum Seeker Operations director, Molly Schaefer, warned this week that arrivals are increasing — just as the number of immigrants illegally crossing the southern border is also spiking.

New York City expects 4,200 people to arrive in a single week, up from the average of 3,000 each week in recent months.

The city has 60,000 immigrants in approximately 200 shelters across the five boroughs.

Councilman Joe Borelli testified before the House of Representatives in September that the city expected to spend $12 billion housing immigrants over three years.
