Winter injured in bicycle accident

Assistant Senate Majority Leader Faith Winter of Westminster is recovering in a Denver hospital after a bicycle accident Wednesday.

According to a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Winter was riding her bicycle to the state Capitol when she tried to avoid being hit by a large truck and hit a curb.

While she was wearing a helmet, she sustained a head injury and was taken to the University of Colorado Hospital, where she underwent surgery to relieve pressure on her brain.

She is now resting and recovering, according to the post.

“The entire Senate Majority Caucus is sending lots of love to Sen. Winter and her family during this scary time, and we’re all praying for a fast and full recovery for our friend,” said Senate President Steve Fenberg of Boulder, in a statement Wednesday. “Knowing Sen. Winter, she’ll be back up on her feet in no time, and we look forward to working alongside her to move Colorado forward once she has recovered.”

Winter is in her second term in the state Senate, first elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022. She also served two terms in the House prior to her election to the Senate.

Winter was selected assistant majority leader earlier this month, after Sen. Dominick Moreno of Commerce City resigned to take a job with Mayor Mike Johnston, and then-Assistant Majority Leader Robert Rodriguez of Denver was chosen to replace Moreno in the majority leader position.

Winter is best known for her legislative efforts on family and medical paid leave and climate change.
