9News meteorologist Kathy Sabine undergoes leg surgery

BY MARCO CUMMINGS

It may be a while before popular local meteorologist Kathy Sabine returns to her regular post at 9News.

The seven-time Emmy award winner and chief meteorologist at KUSA experienced an accident and fall while caring for her horses over the Thanksgiving holiday, she revealed on a Facebook post on Nov. 30.

According to Sabine, the accident left her with severe injuries to her hamstring muscles and tendons, “ripping them from the bone.” The injuries were so severe that she underwent surgery at Sky Ridge Medical Center just a few days after being admitted to the facility at AdventHealth Parker.

It’s not the first time Sabine has had to take time away from the station due to medical reasons. Last summer, Sabine spent time away from 9News while she underwent a skin cancer procedure.

According to medical experts, grade 3 hamstring injuries are complete tears can take months to heal and often require hamstring repair surgery.

For context, Jamal Murray of the Denver Nuggets’ injury has been reported as a “strain”, but has kept him out of team lineups for several weeks.

Sabine explained in her post that she will require a leg brace and crutches for the next 6-8 weeks.

She also thanked doctors Dr. Martin Boublik and Dr James Genuario at the UCHealth Steadman Hawkins clinic. The facility is named after famed orthopedic surgeon J. Richard Steadman, a surgeon to a laundry list of famous athletes which includes Alex Rodriguez, Greg Norman, Mario Lemieux, Ronaldo, Martina Navratilova, Lindsay Davenport, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, John Elway, Bruce Smith, Bode Miller and Picabo Street.

Like the others, Sabine has plenty of loyal fans hoping she isn’t sidelined long.
