100 YEARS AGO IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS

Ben Stapleton is being sworn in as mayor, promising a new era. One difference from today is that the mayoral appointments include the chief of police (a new one for the new term) and some other offices that are now elective.

Most of the front page is devoted to self-promotion. Corrine Berge, a recent East High grad who lives on East Colfax, is the big winner of the “T-Word Object Contest.” One can only assume it is sort of like a crossword. But the money is good: The equivalent of $26,600 in 2023 dollars.

The News is also promoting its cooking festival. Today’s big event is a cake contest, but yesterday featured the biscuit contest, which “triggered the enthusiasm and determination of the women of Denver.”

Thirty-two white-clad women marched to 32 gas stoves and 32 mixing tables to organ music in front of an excited crowd and the result would “delight the palate of the most exacting connoisseur.” Biscuits are judged on 30% general appearance, 30% texture and lightness, 10% crust and 30% flavor.
