Double fits usually suggest bidding on rather than defending, but it was very hard for West to make the winning decision holding so much of his strength in spades. South ruffed the opening heart lead in hand and cashed the ace of spades. He crossed to dummy with the ace of clubs and ruffed another heart. Back to dummy again with the king of clubs and dummy’s last heart was ruffed. South now had the choice of end-playing either opponent. He could lead a club to East, forcing a ruff-sluff or a diamond lead. In that case, however, South would have to guess the diamond position. Even better, South led a trump to West’s king. A diamond lead from West would be into South and require no guess, so South could claim his contract. Nicely done!
