Charles William Beebe was probably the most famous American naturalist of the twenties, thirties and beyond, and was a celebrity as well as a scientist. He was an ornithologist, marine biologist, entomologist, explorer and author. He conducted many expeditions for the New York Zoological Society, wrote many books and delivered countless lectures. He is considered one of the founders of ecology. Three days after this story, on the 15th, the Bathysphere set another record by diving to 3,028 feet. The story mentions “assistant” Otis Barton. Barton would not have liked that. The two were partners in the dives, and Barton was the one who actually designed the Bathysphere. He also was the person who finally broke the 3,028 record in 1947.
