111 YEARS AGO IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS

The media — or should we say, the press — is still covering the Henwood trial, but the public feels let down by the court presence of Isabelle Patterson Springer, the beautiful woman — she is called beautiful at least three times in every story — at the heart of the argument at the Brown Palace that ended with two men shot dead. The subhead within the story even says, “Mrs. Springer disappoints.”

The paper notes that Mrs. Springer continues to sport an outfit identical to the one wore by Evelyn Nesbitt Thaw during the Trial of the Century in 1906. (She was the beauty idealized as the “Gibson Girl” who was at the center of a different triangle, when her husband shot and killed famous architect Stanford White at the rooftop restaurant at Madison Square Garden in New York.)
