Jaguars hire longtime 49ers exec Waugh as assistant GM

Jacksonville, Fla.: The Jacksonville Jaguars formally hired Ethan Waugh as the team’s assistant general manager on Wednesday.

Waugh, who had been rumored to be in line for the job for more than a month, worked alongside current Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke for a dozen seasons (2005-16) in San Francisco. Waugh served as the 49ers’ senior personnel assistant (2012-14) and senior player personnel coordinator (2015-17) while Baalke was GM in San Francisco.

“Strengthening the personnel department was a priority this offseason, and we are thrilled to make this addition to the team,” Baalke said in a statement. “I know he will work tirelessly to help build a winning organization here in Jacksonville.”

Waugh most recently served as San Francisco’s vice president of player personnel (2021-22) following three seasons as the team’s director of college scouting and football systems.

Eagles, CB James Bradberry agree on 1-year contract

Philadelphia: The Philadelphia Eagles strengthened their secondary, agreeing on a one-year contract with veteran cornerback James Bradberry on Wednesday.

Bradberry, who made the Pro Bowl in 2020, was released by the New York Giants on May 9 for salary reasons. He would have been a $21.9 million cap hit.

Bradberry’s deal with Philadelphia reportedly is worth $7.5 million, including $7.25 guaranteed. He’ll start opposite four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay in defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s zone-heavy scheme.

A second-round pick by Carolina in 2016, Bradberry spent four seasons with the Panthers and two with the Giants. He has 15 interceptions in 92 career starts.

Bradberry is the latest significant addition for the Eagles, who went 9-8 last season and lost to Tampa Bay in the wild-card round. Philadelphia signed linebackers Haason Reddick and Kyzir White in free agency and drafted defensive tackle Jordan Davis 13th overall and linebacker Nakobe Dean in the third round.

Jets sign Garrett Wilson; all three first-rounders under contract

New York: The New York Jets signed wide receiver Garrett Wilson to a four-year, $20.55 million deal Wednesday, the last of the team’s three first-round draft picks to get under contract.

Wilson was the No. 10 overall pick last month out of Ohio State. He’s expected to be an immediate contributor as a rookie, giving second-year quarterback Zach Wilson a speedy vertical threat in what should be an improved offense. The fully guaranteed deal for Garrett Wilson includes a $12.1 million signing bonus, according to SNY.

Cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, the No. 4 overall pick, signed his four-year, $38.7 million deal on May 7. Defensive end Jermaine Johnson, the 26th pick, signed a four-year, $13.1 million contract Monday.

Garrett Wilson had 70 receptions for 1,058 yards and 12 touchdowns for Ohio State, establishing himself as one of college football’s top wide receivers. He was the second wide receiver drafted last month, two spots after Atlanta selected USC’s Drake London.

With the Jets, Wilson joins a receiving corps that includes wideouts Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Braxton Berrios and Denzel Mims, and tight ends C.J. Uzomah, Tyler Conklin and thirdround pick Jeremy Ruckert. New York finished near the bottom of the league in several key categories, but the addition of Wilson could be a huge boost.

His 4.38-second speed in the 40-yard dash had lots of teams interested in Wilson as did his knack for making contested catches.

“You just have to have a plan,” Wilson said during rookie minicamp two weeks ago. “You’re playing against good players and you have to go out there with a plan. You just can’t expect to run around someone. You have to get on their shoulders and make them uncomfortable. There’s a lot of nuances to running routes and I’m excited to keep learning.”
