Automobile thefts made up the biggest single share of property crimes citywide.

Police recorded 1,424 auto thefts in the four-week period from July 4 through July 31, which made up about 43% of all property crimes.

The proportion is consistent with auto thefts compared to total property crimes in the year from August 2020 through July 2021, when auto thefts made up about 42% of all property crimes in Denver.

Since 2017, auto thefts in the fourweek period in July have hovered between 39% and 43% of total property crimes in Denver in that period recorded by police.

But raw numbers of both auto thefts and all recorded property crimes for the same period have increased each year since 2017.

They spiked in 2020, and the increase continued this year.

In 2020, auto thefts jumped by more than 200 over 2019, from 1156 to 904 between July 4 and July 31.

By comparison, they increased by 10 from 2018 to 2019 and 48 from 2017 to 2018 in the same four-week period.

The DIA and Central Business District neighborhoods had the highest rates of auto thefts reported by police in the four-week period in July. The Central Business District had 113.6 per 10,000 residents according to police data, and the Central Business District had 526.9.

Those two neighborhoods also had the highest rates of auto thefts reported by police from August 2020 to July 2021. The Union Station and Civic Center areas had the next highest rates of auto thefts, at 581.3 and 762.4.
