15 YEARS AGO IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS

Editor’s note: Every day, The Denver Gazette reprints some of the best front pages of the Rocky Mountain News as pulled from its 100-plus-year archives.

Not quite as far back in history today. This is pretty early in the Ward Churchill saga.

Churchill wrote an essay in 2001 that said the 9-11 attacks were a natural consequence of U.S. policy, but it didn’t make headlines until 2005. Churchill was fired by CU in July 2007 for alleged research misconduct. In April 2009, a Denver jury found that Churchill was unjustly fired, awarding him $1 in damages. A judge vacated the damages in July 2009 and declined to reinstate Churchill. In November 2010, the Colorado Court of Appeals upheld the lower court’s ruling, and the Colorado Supreme Court upheld that decision in 2012. In 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case.
